This free VPN (short for virtual private network) service, created by a Japanese Ph.D. student as an academic project, has taken off rapidly since it went live last week. According to this report, more than 77,000 users have tried using the service to bypass firewalls that restrict Internet content. The majority of these users appear to be from China.
In an interview with IDG News Service, creator Daiyuu Nobori said that his software is easier to use compared with existing solutions. It's also free, as it relies mostly on volunteers to host VPN servers for the benefit of others. As it's started by a Japanese student, it's perhaps not surprising that most of the VPN servers are located in Japan. However, we also saw servers from as far away as Nigeria and even Iran.
We gave the VPN Gate client a quick spin and it was certainly easy to install and use on the PC. The US VPN server that we tried had decent connection speed--we could stream a video from Google Play (US version) without any lag.
While tech-savvy users are probably aware of VPNs--some may even be using a paid VPN service--casual users may find VPN Gate a good, and free alternative.
